I'm not a big fan of showing kids under the age of 10 horror movies.
Freddy and Jason have their place and more importantly, their time. I don't know if the violent slasher film creates any more mass murderers that the violent video game, but i'm not going to be the one to test the theory or tell others too.
There will be plenty of times in a young life to be truly horrified. There are films to watch after trick or treating and films to watch that provide an alibi for egg throwing and destruction of property. This list is for the trick or treat crowd.
Neo-Retro-Crash recommends the following 13 (ooooh scary) films for kids under 10. Some are about Halloween or the Day of the Dead others are just freakin' cool.
I've left certain things off the list like Frankenweenie, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Edward Scissorhands. I love all of these, but wait until the myth of Santa Claus is dead or Junior High. Some kids may seek these things out earlier, but this choice is not about horror, it's about emotional depth and maturity of mind.
