I like films that are a bit off the beaten path, this often includes movies that are weird, awful, or misunderstood. Catch and Release is one of those films that falls into the misunderstood category. Is it a romantic comedy, is it a buddy movie, is it a comedy at all? It is quite the descriptive head scratcher.
The film starts with a funeral. I love that kind of thing. The deceased is the catalyst for the plot and all the things that happen afterward stem from this point. If you throw in a fiancé and a group of buddies, an overbearing mother and an infidelity scandal...and you still don't fully comprehend what this film is about.
Catch and Release, the answer is in the title. This movie is about letting go in the wake of tragedy, it's about moving on, even under the fucked up version of loss that fate has just handed you. The cast is superb. Jennifer Garner is wonderful, and I'm not just saying that cuz I think Affleck is an idiot right now.
Kevin Smith turns in a wonderful and less vulgarian character than usual.
The Wikipedia stuff calls ir a romantic comedy, but this is not a feel good movie. This is not a full on happily ever after scenarios. This is one of those films where, if you survive to grind happiness, you've done okay.
