Super hero of the day: a hero's death ( one for Chapo)

Today I speak in reverent tones about the only cartoon that ever made me cry.  I speak of the amazing animated sci-fi  soap opera called Robotech:,the Macross Saga.

Most folks are Rick Hunter Fans and a large portion of the series is dedicated to the fly boy who works his way from pacifist to Admiral, bu this isn't about Mr. Hunter.

Today we speak of his mentor.  A pilot, archaeologist, anthropologist, lover, fighter, drinker, and a bit of an asshole.  We speak today of Roy Fokker.
Roy Fokker was an Ace pilot at a circus long before he flew a verity have fighter plane.  He was a hotshot and leader of the Skull Squadron and what set him apart from all the other fly boys as a character and as a man was the way he died.
I never cried when they shot Bambi's mom, but the tragic death scene of Roy Fokker made me weep with sorrow and anger and loss.  Heroes are supposed to live forever in cartoons, but the death of Roy Fokker taught me different.

Roy dies in episode 18 ("Pineapple Salad"), from wounds sustained while defending Macross from the Zentradi Instead of going to the hospital to treat his wounds, he chooses to play the guitar while waiting for Claudia  to finish her pineapple salad; while she's cooking for him, he collapses from a sudden internal bleeding and passes away few minutes later. To Rick Hunter's chagrin given his then shaken self-confidence in his flying skill in war, he is promoted as the new leader of Roy's squadron, using his mecha as well.
