Aquaman is a fictional superheroappearing in American comic bookspublished by DC Comics. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, the character debuted in More Fun Comics #73 (November 1941). Initially a backup feature in DC's anthology titles, Aquaman later starred in several volumes of a solo title. During the late 1950s and 1960s superhero-revival period known as the Silver Age, he was a founding member of the Justice League of America. In the 1990s Modern Age, Aquaman's character became more serious than in most previous interpretations, with storylines depicting the weight of his role as king of Atlantis.
I was gonna take it easy today, I was gonna do something not confusing, but then someone got all up in my face about the lameness of Aquaman. They were all "how can they give Aquaman a movie" and " isn't that going to be the lamest thing ever?" .
It probably is going to be the lamest thing ever, but that won't be the fault of the character, it will be the fault of movie folks who have difficulty finding their buttocks in broad daylight during a two handed search.
What people don't understand is tha Aquaman has morphed from totally weak and lame and turned out to be one of the biggest breakout characters in comics today.
I'm not gonna sit here and defend everything that has ever been written about Aquaman. He used to wear a helmet filled with water do he could survive outside of the ocean for an hour. They used to have a shower over his seat at the JLA round table so that he could stay moist. In the mind of an eight year old reading a comic book these things make sense. The biggest question in the 8 year old brain is why Aquaman isn't called Water Boy.
Aquaman used to be able to talk to fish via telepathy, but through the miracles of science, we have discovered that fish brains are too small for this type of interactive communication. It is now stated that Aquaman manipulates their tiny marine life brains to do his bidding. This ability is so useful that Aquaman one used sharks to repel an alien invasion. The results were bloody and led to the feeding of hungry sharks.
Most of the lame things about Aquaman have been either repaired or removed, but for years the Aquatic hero was the butt of countless jokes, including a recurring bit on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
If you left comics during the silver age, you missed many reinventions of the Undersea king. The first initial change was to make him more King than Hero. The stories mostly involved issues with being the fair and Just ruler of Atlantis, and assuming the role as the kingdoms protector. For this we changed the costume to Make Aquaman mor Aqua in nature.
This suit did not last very long and eventuallyy appeared on the back of Aquaman's evil doppelganger, Thanatos.
This lead to the Saltwater adventures of a more Savage Aquaman. a bearded and Angrier Aquaman. An Aquaman who had his hand fed to Pirahnas, an Aquaman who walked around shirtless because the icy ocean depths had made him immune to the cold. I'm talking about Badass Aquaman. armor wearing Aquaman.
Angry Aquaman got himself exiled from Atlantis, and eventually put the orange suit back on
Lost and alone and now missing a hand. He spent some time running from the new regime of Atlantis.Cut off from his oceans and stranded on the shorelines of Britain, Arthur found himself in the shoes of King Arthur. Stumbling into the protection of the lady of the lake. Arthur found himself renewed, clean shaven and sporting a new replacement made of magically enchanted Water.
Welcome to the brief period we will all the Age of the Fresh Water Aquaman.
Are you confused, are you tired. Me too. I'm gonna skip the Sword of Atlantis years where there was an Aquaman, but he wasn't Aquaman.
Okay...breathe.
I'm gonna bring you up to date sort of.
Aquaman can now breathe on land indefinitely, he has the power to mentally manipulate aquatic life including the deep down fish brain that humans have. Aquaman is immune to extreme cold due to the icy temperatures of the ocean. Aquaman's muscles are also ocean conditioned with a super density. His skin has been known to deflect machine gun fire.
In an alternate time line Aquaman is betrothed to WonderWoman. This is a plot point I would like to see bleed through into the DC a Universe proper, but I digress.
The modern Aquaman has one back to his more traditional look. He has both his hands and is on a power level of near Superman proportions. He may occasionally still ride his sea horse, ignorant people still piss him off, and his past is more sullied than he would care to admit.
Anything Aquaman written by Geoff Johns or Peter David is well done and Makes with the comic book happy satisfaction.
Also don't be confused by other versions of Aquaman.
This one is Outrageous!
